Calcined Brown Corundum

Calcined brown corundum is produced by processing conventional brown corundum at high temperatures to remove or volatilize impurities. As a result, it becomes purer and develops a rougher surface, making it more hydrophilic. Moreover, microcracks formed during crushing further enhance its toughness and strength.

    Product Introduction:

Calcined brown corundum is produced by processing conventional brown corundum at high temperatures to remove or volatilize impurities. As a result, it becomes purer and develops a rougher surface, making it more hydrophilic. Moreover, microcracks formed during crushing further enhance its toughness and strength.

    Advantages:

    1) Eliminate the abnormal expansion of brown corundum abrasive.
Abnormal expansion of abrasives can induce network‑like cracks on the surface of brown corundum ceramic grinding wheels during firing, resulting in substantial scrap. Calcination is the most effective method for eliminating such abnormal expansion.

    2) Enhance the toughness and abrasive performance of brown corundum abrasives.
It was found that, during the calcination of the abrasive, the solidification and oxidation of Ti³⁺ within the corundum crystals induce lattice contraction, thereby enhancing the compressive strength of the abrasive. Furthermore, calcination helps to relieve internal stresses generated during the granulation process. Consequently, various grinding tools made from calcined abrasives are not only more durable but also sharper, leading to improved grinding performance.

    3) Improved the hydrophilicity of brown corundum abrasive.
After calcination at 800–900°C for 120 minutes, the hydrophilicity of the brown fused alumina abrasive increases threefold. This is attributed to the removal of volatiles and other impurities from the abrasive surface—resulting in the combustion of low-melting-point materials—and to the enhanced capillary action on the abrasive surface. Hydrophilic abrasives are used for coating applications and exhibit improved durability, with performance enhancements ranging from 30% to 50%.

    4) Improve the strength of the abrasive tool.
After calcination, the abrasive material is freed from surface impurities such as volatiles, thereby enhancing its purity and cleanliness and improving the bonding strength between abrasive particles. This binder is used in the manufacture of grinding tools, reducing binder consumption while increasing the strength of the abrasive.
