Black corundum is an energy‑saving, environmentally friendly alternative wear‑resistant material produced by high‑temperature smelting in an electric arc furnace, using high‑iron alumina or high‑alumina bauxite combined with high‑alumina iron ore. After melting and subsequent cooling, it yields a gray‑black crystalline product whose principal mineral phases are α‑Al₂O₃ and ferrospinel.
